New Smyrna Beach: So Much to Do and Neighbor to Velocity Clinical Research in Edgewater

The Beach…

What can you do when you visit the charming waterside town of New Smyrna Beach? Pretty much anything!

Since New Smyrna Beach is virtually surrounded by water, let’s start there! With the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Intracoastal Waterway to the west and Mosquito Lagoon between the two, New Smyrna Beach is simply full of ocean and riverside fun.

New Smyrna’s beautiful beaches that go on for miles are comprised of both hard packed sand beaches that are designated for driving and no-driving portions sections of the beach for those who favor quieter, more relaxing beach days.

Those who love watersports will also love New Smyrna Beach, where you can rent a paddleboard or kayak and get some exercise while you take in all the beautiful views and varied wildlife along the riverbanks and beaches. You can snorkel, waterski, go tubing, or rent a Jet Ski and hit those wakes. New Smyrna is famous for surf town too, so hang ten!

Explore by boat on your own with a leisurely boat ride along the picturesque Intracoastal Waterway; search for Disappearing Island which can only be found when the tide is low; or motor over to one of the many waterfront restaurants for an ocean view lunch or dinner. Or let someone else do all the work and just book an eco-tour for an easy and enjoyable day of sightseeing along the Indian River Lagoon and Canaveral National Seashore.

With tons of inshore fishing holes with scads of species of fish, direct access to deep sea fishing in the ocean and freshwater rivers just brimming with bass, New Smyrna Beach is a fisher person’s paradise. Clamming and crabbing can also be boatloads of fun.

Then there’s the Marine Discovery Center, which offers an unparalleled interactive experience that’s fun for the whole family. The Marine Discovery Center promotes healthy habitats and informs visitors about the amazing biodiversity of the Indian River Lagoon – home to over 4,000 species and spans 156 miles of Florida’s east coast. Its vast array of delightful and informative programs for all ages include exhibit tanks, live shoreline demonstrations, kayak eco-tours, classes, camps and lectures with certified naturalists. The Marine Discovery Center’s amazing aquatic adventures also include a butterfly garden, nature play area and 29-foot observatory!

So, whether you prefer beach time, boating, swimming, fishing, watersports, or learning more about an incredible aquatic environment, New Smyrna Beach has something for you!

A Rich History…

If it is history that intrigues you, you may want to stroll down historic Canal Street, where stately oaks line your path and the architecture transports you to another time. Enjoy a tasty treat at the old fashioned creamery and then walk to the old post office, which is now the New Smyrna Beach Museum of History, and check out exhibits encompassing Native American artifacts, the captivating history of surfing in New Smyrna Beach and the long ago settlement of this area. You can even catch a real-time glimpse of archeologists at work! Ah, but there is so much more…

There’s the Turtle Mound National Historic site, the largest shell mound on the United States mainland, which was constructed by ancient Timucua Indians; Sugar Mill Ruins is the remains of a coquina sugar factory that was raided during both Seminole Wars; and Old Fort Park, which could be the ruins of a Spanish mansion or the home of Andrew Turnbull, founder of New Smyrna Beach. You decide because that mystery has yet to be solved!

Plus, Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and Museum, guide to mariners for over 130 years, is a local and national historic treasure. So take that infamous trek up the 175 feet of the tallest lighthouse in Florida…and as they say at this museum, “Come for the climb and stay for the history!”

Lively Flagler Avenue…

If you prefer to live in the moment, lively Flagler Avenue may be more your scene.  Enjoy its energetic vibe born of live entertainment, fun local haunts and beachy boutiques. Its eclectic mix of dining venues is fabulous for foodies too!

Eventful…

New Smyrna Beach is also proud host of tons of wonderful events – from seafood festivals, to chili and chowder cook-offs, to art fairs, music festivals, wine walks and classic car shows – held throughout the year!

Culture Abounds…

New Smyrna Beach also offers a cultural community beyond compare. Considered one of 100 Best Small Art Towns, New Smyrna Beach is home to Atlantic Center for the Arts, which is known for its artist-in-residence program and multitude of community offerings, both of which showcase amazing amounts of talent. Oh, but that’s not all! Art class and exhibits at The Hub on Canal and Bob Ross’ Workshop are also indispensable staples of the New Smyrna Beach Arts District, not to mention a collection of art galleries too numerous to mention. And don’t forget to pay homage to thespian art by catching a performance at The Little Theatre, featuring talented local artists and musicians in five to eight Broadway-style shows in a typical year!
